If you search the web for steps to building your dropship business, most will tell you to start by building a website. By all means this is a fair option, but if you want to make the most out of your time and avoid getting caught up in marketing random products with no real direction... I recommend a niche first!
The world is ever changing and technology is advancing faster than my ability to navigate through it! When it comes to niche marketing you should be focused on uniqueness with a demand. Make sure to also plan for something that is not likely to be a short fad that fades into the dust within a year. Yes, you can make a ton of money with a fad product, but it is not sustainable unless you constantly keep up with the next new thing. The goal should be to solve a problem that will encourage consumers to seek your product or service. There should be a clear why, defining why consumers should choose you as a seller and why your product is "The Product".
Some markets are large enough to share the platform. Depending on what product or services your in. While I encourage uniqueness, sometimes validity lies in a plan that has already been proven. If you are building a service based business there is a good chance others have already successfully paved a clear marketing path. When this is the case, do not recreate the wheel. Use what works!
Narrow down your market. Take for instance "Baby", a large market that is ever popular and offers a huge range of opportunity. Rather than going into the "Baby" space with random items throughout your store, maybe focus on one thing such as baby clothes, baby blankets, specific baby accessories. All of these can be defined further or even combined, but understand the more you offer the harder it may become to determine your best market and how to use your ad spend for product promotions. The more you key into specifics, the more likely you are to get the audience that is interested in your exact product. If I want a baby blanket, and click an ad specifically for baby blankets, I'm am just an offer away from being converted!
A future lesson will discuss defining your target audience. I highly recommend you start considering your audience early because product & audience are the link to sales. Your goal is to put the right product in front of the right audience. Check out niche ideas list for 2021.
Our best seller is the Wine Country Tote and is sold at Kohls, Target, Macy's, & other big named stores. How can I possibly compete? What would lead consumers to buy from me?

2) I may be hitting a market they have not sought
3) When you sell a product (even drop shipped) you own the store. You confidently promote the product as if it's the only place to get it.
4) I offer a discount that beats the competition

We use Shopify as our host & recommend looking through the products available through interactive platforms. If you are planning on hosting your business through Shopify I recommend Spocket to compare cost vs. sales price and find out if you can affordably promote certain products. This will give you an idea of what's selling. You do not have to use Spocket, although for many it is a profitable interaction and easy to use.
